A Bit of Earth

Millennium Artplace, Saint John Free Public Library, Saint John NB
August 4 to September 16, 2017

I am fascinated with the interaction between humans and nature; in particular, our efforts to exert control over the chaotic beauty of the natural world. We expend so much time and energy to transform a little strip of pavement into paradise as we perceive it – bringing in a bit of earth here and there, in measured doses. Sometimes, nature relents; other times, it struggles and protests, and eventually overcomes brick and mortar. Whether these images depict decay and abandonment, or tender care and attention, to me, they all point to different phases of the same love story between a city and its citizens.

Various sizes, printed on deep matte photo paper and mounted to black foam core. All of the titles are lines from works of fiction and poetry.
